Painting OEM wheels
I'm currently running 16" Bridge Spokes in silver as my winter wheels and had been looking for a set of black wheels to replace them. Can't really find anything I want in the Marketplace so I'm thinking about having them painted. Anyone ever had this done and if so, what did it run you $$$ wise?

If you've got some patience and time, you can paint them yourself. I've done 4 sets of wheels using the Duplicolor Wheel paint. Example:

Dan00Hawk, you did a great job on those wheels! Patience I have; time is the issue for me. And honestly, even with patience I don't think I could do that good of a job.
Anyone have pics of powder coated wheels? I've only really seen one set of wheels powder coated and they seemed to be very flat.

Cleaning and prepping the wheels and taping them off takes the most time... I probably spent an entire afternoon doing it from start to finish. Light coats work best, and be sure to spray consistently to avoid drips, runs, and splatter (shake the can often, wipe off the nozzle...).
If you just go one color, all you need to do is cover up the tires, though, and that would save a considerable amount of time. I used some 3x5 notecards inserted between the rim and the tire to form a nice barrier, instead of trying to mask off the tire.
Practice on a spare tire rim or something else if you're concerned about your technique. I'm certainly not a pro, but thanks for the compliments.

Painting OEM Wheels
I hate to bring up an old topic, but I took a shot at painting the wheels on my mini and figured i'd share. I think they came out alright, nowhere near as good as the other guys at the beginning of this thread though lol. But as this is my first mini (Just got it a couple days ago) and I was going to get some new rims down the road I figured id try my hand at a little DIY work.

Great job, Anthony! They look good. It's all in the prep. If you do a good prep job, the paint will last much longer. Also, sometime people will do it with the wheel weights removed and then get them re-balanced so that you aren't painting over the weight.

I know I'm a newbie (hi everyone) but I plasti dipped my winter wheels on my non-mini. Only took a few hours and, so far, has held up perfectly to everything Chicago's winter has dealt my way.
I know the covering isn't permanent but if I get a couple season's out of the dip for a couple hours of work, I'm sold. Cost = $40.
That being said, the gloss on the painted black wheels far outshines anything I'd get from dip.

Looks great! Be sure to say hi! I'll be the head person working registration so I can't be missed. I really enjoy that side decal.
