Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 OR Sport A/S plus ?

Is anyone running Michelin Exalto PE2 tires on their Mini Cooper? They are summer tires where the Pilot Sport A/S plus tires are all saeson tires. I live in Florida where it don't snow so I'm thinking of getting the Exaltos but I have not seen anyone using them on this forum.

I have looked at the comparisons on Tire Rack and they both are really close in performance but the Exalto is much less expensive. The Exaltos are two full pounds lighter then the A/S plus tires.

Any real life information would be appreciated.

I have the Dunlap runflats now and since I have a plug in one of them I'm thinking of changing to Michelin non-runflats.

I have and will run the PE2s again as my daily tire. Great ride, quiet, and handles very well. The A/S is what we run on the BMW, very good to, much higher mileage but not as sticky.

Thanks minimarks

I'm kind of leaning towards the PE2's. I'm not about to go north in the winter so they should do me fine.

Your welcome.

They do very well in the rain too, so you should do just fine.

I'm running Mich Pilot Exalto A/S, 205/55-16 on my 2004 MCS. They have been fine; however, in a recent heavy downpour for some reason they were very disconcerting. Properly inflated; lots of tread; so I'm not sure what the problem was.

I have 17" PE2's, and they're OK. To my ear, they're a noisy tire, but then again, I think some of that is just the fact that the car is not well-insulated against road noise.

One thing is for certain - ANYTHING is an upgrade from any of the stock runflats!

I have researched 33 tires as candidates to replace the OEM's (non-rft) that will come on my Cooper hardtop. The PE2 is the hands down winner due to achieving an outstanding .93 g's in the wet. Source: Tire Rack

The PE A/S recorded a disappointing .75. I'd take the Sport AS plus over those at .85 for sure.

I run 205/45-17 PE2 tires on my MCS. They are excellent in the wet, and quite good in the dry. I wouldn't call them quiet, but I'm not aware of a good handling tire that is quieter.

TireRack tests for summer don't seem to be directly comparible to their all season tests. I get the feeling that they compare all season to all season, and don't score them in relationship to summer tires. So, I wouldn't take their A/S numbers and compare them to PE2 numbers.

Generally, all season tires are a compromise. They are mediocre in all conditions. The A/S are probably at the top of the all season tires, but I doubt they can compare to the PE2.

You think the measurement of g force is skewed by the category of the tire?

I have PE2s on Shawn (the S) and I'd get them again if Michelin hadn't discontinued them in the 16" sizes. Very grippy, very quiet and very smooth, great all round tire.

I know I'm late to this party...

I picked up my 05 CS in Houston back in June, and drove it back to New Orleans on the OEM runflats. Six hours of stiff sidewall warble, and I was ready to stab somebody! I was DETERMINED to get normal tires in that car, and I mean RIGHT THEN.

Fortunately, I had the foresight to call TireRack, and talk to them rather than sprinting over to the nearest tire shop. They pointed me at these Pilot PE2's, and 36 hours later, I was riding smooth and quiet, hearing nothing but the whine of my supercharger! I'm no track monster, but these tires are quiet, sticky and straight as an arrow, even on New Orleans roads. I just freakin' LOVE them!

In fact, I like them so much, that, were they available for the Audi and the M5, I'd have three active sets! Makes me wonder what the stumbling block is for making these in larger sizes....

Don't know how they'd work in the cold, but I don't have to worry too much about that in NOLA!

Mark
