Painting Wheels Black: Pics and Options

Painting Wheels Black: Pics and Options
My wife wants her wheels (07 MCS 16" S-Winders)) painted black.
Who's painted the wheels, got any pics? Who has done powdercoat vs paint vs plexi-dip?
If Paint, any pics with flat vs gloss and normal vs "wheel paint". I've done searches but havent found a good thread with the answer to all of the above, so here it goes.
Also looking at painting the bubbling chrome hood scoop to match (black).

I have used Plasti dip on some other car parts, its easy to work with, and looks good, but for me it only lasted a year. i would think on wheels it would last even less.
Krylon, or Rustoleum make a special paint for wheels, you may want to try that. I would go with powder coating myself if i was doing it.

I'd go the powder coating route or even just order a 2nd set of wheels already painted black and then ebay the current ones (or swap your currents for a black set on ebay). Maybe even use them as a set for snows or summer tires. To really paint them properly, you're going to have to take the wheels off the car and remove the tires, something most aren't equipped to do at home and will probably cost you another $100. Then you'd have to either leave the car on blocks until the whole process is complete and that will take some time.

Wee I did a quick search and came up with https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d-s-lites.html The (small) consensus amongst people who have done this is that they seem to ba happy with it at least a couple of months later. It is certainly a good way to see if you would like the look before investing in new tires. Wonder if they make plasti-dip in HO?!?
They do, however, offer a 'dip kit'; it's intended use is for tool handles, so it's set up in a can that you dip the tool into. The stuff can be brushed on too... the neat thing here is they have a dip kit that comes with several dyes, allowing you to mix a custom color. It might take some experimentation to get the shade just right, but you have the opportunity to mix just the right color for your application.

Plasti-Dip in 'rattle-cans' have a limited number of colors (6-8, IIRC) and anything other than black is very difficult to find in stores.

400 degrees for 4 hours isn't going to hurt steel wheels. I'm not too sure on aluminum wheels, but most wheels today are an alloy, so it won't hurt them. If you want a durable finish, powder coating is the way to go.

I painted mine with the Duplicolor Wheel paint in Matt black.
It is really great paint. Covers awesome and dries really fast.
I did a workmates mustang wheels on the car in a couple of hours after work one day, but when I did mine I took the wheels off the car and cleaned the inside and outside with acetone, then skuffed with a course scourer, acetone again, and masked up the tire. Take your time and build up the coats.Start with the inside of the wheel, then flip it over and do the outside. Spray the edges of the spokes first and then do the faces.
If you take the tires off the rim it makes it alot easier to get the whole lip, but asl ong as you mask of neatly you can spray around the corner pretty well. Being matt black it isn't too much of a problem to paint them on the rims, but if I was doing anything other than black I'd get the tires removed for sure!
I have had people think they were factory black rims. The key is to make sure you don't put too much on too fast and make sure it is CLEAN!!!

Used Duplicolor on mine as well. I had to go to three different stores to find enough paint. Satin was all that was available. It has a nice shine, but not too glossy. I did not clear coat them and I do wonder how much better they would have held up if I had. A bottle of Testors paint is good for chips!

My original reason for painting was because we repaired some curbing on my wheels and couldn't find a silver that matched. The silver we used yellowed really badly once it was sprayed with clear. We sanded them back down, but probably did not get them as smooth as we should have because of the monster flakes in that godawful silver paint. The black was a short term fix and now that I have done it, I can't imagine going back to silver. Eventually, I will just buy a set of black wheels, but with a new baby, it may be a while.
