Rattling Parking Brake Cable

Hello Everyone,

There is an annoying rattling sound coming from the rear bottom right side of the car when I drive slow in traffic. Was afraid it was my suspension, but upon close inspection, everything (springs/strut/endlinks) felt solid.

So I shook around the hoses and cables around my brakes and found out my parking brake cable doesn't fit snug between the loop coming from the side of my caliper...thought maybe that is the culprit for all that metal-to-metal rattling.

Has anyone else have this problem??? What's the fix? Had both of my rear calipers re-manufactured since the right-rear calipers seized last winter. I'm afraid the mechanic that re-installed my brakes either forgot to fit in an o-ring or another part to lessen the gap!?!?!?! What's the cheapest and easiest fix ... just recently spent an arm & a leg on a new clutch/lightened flywheel install and bought a new exhaust!!! Or do I have to live with the rattling?

Once I fully engage the parking brake, the cable feels more tot and solid...so it's got to be the bowden cable that's rattling in the loop!

Arrgggh, so annoying!

Please help!
Jay

Is there a rubber groumet in the "loop". If its not there you need to install one. If it is you can use some silicone grease and you wont get that squeeky rattle from rubber rubbing against each other. thats the only noise I have ever heard from E brake assemblies

No, there's no rubber groumet in the loop...thought there was something missing. It's not so much an o-ring but a tube right?

Can you tell me which part # it is on the following website:

Thanks!

Take a zip tie & tie the cable up. If the sound goes away you've got it. If not you will need to look further. Does that noise go away if you are on the brakes?

Check the rear pads....

This is from another thread...

Check that the pad is clipped into the caliper piston.

Here is what I found on mine.

I chased the rattle in mine for over a year. Out of desperation I went to the dealer & talked with a very good tech. He told me he has seen aftermarket pads with a loose fit make a rattle. His advice was that I drive over the bumpy road that caused my brakes to rattle & drag the brake lightly while doing so. Yep the rattle went away. I pulled the brakes, & the inner pad was clipped in as it should be. What I did find was the pad itself was moving in the caliper.

When you pull your pads look closely & you will see shiny parts of the pad backing plate where it is banging on the caliper. The caliper will have matching shiny points.

My pads worked fine except for that blasted annoying rattle. They were Hawk ceramics. I replaced them with Akebono ceramic pads. All is quiet & I'm happy.
