The 215/45's work fine.
The 45's are taller and much wider then the 205/45/17's that were on the car originaly. They ride great and stick like glue and do not make noise like the run-flats. They look great and no problems at all with any rubbing. The 40's if made would probably be a harsher ride because of the short sidewall. I personaly don't think they would be as good on the street as the 45's. That is my opinion. I don't think you will go wrong using the 45's.

215/45/17 is just a tad taller and better fit for the wheel well

They are nice and wide and excellent in wet weather

Well Ronnie - I have a R53.. and I am much lower than you on top of that. We have much less clearance for lots of rubber. I am also running a wider wheel with a much lower off-set than you. I already have a 215/45/17 with a torn up sidewall from a wheel with higher off-set.. So they absolutely won't work, but you can keep trying to convince me.
