Sell MINI w/ original rims or aftermarket rims? any thoughts on this?

Hi there,

Well.... I am thinking to sell my 2008 MCS next Summer (still have enough time to change my mind) at Carmax so I could get a new 2012 Countryman.

MCS: 2008 MINI Cooper S 6-spd, Pepper white/Black

1. R94 16" Bridge Spoke 195/55-16 (Original Wheels and Tires)

2. Team Dynamics Pro-Race 1.2 17" Falken 452 215/45-17

What option should I get more $$$ if I want to sell my MINI at Carmax?

is that would be a "MCS + 1" or "MCS + 2"?

Thanks in advance.

If you've saved all of your paperwork ie. Build Sheet and the new owner is MINIfied, that is they know what they are buying, then I would say OEM Wheels, since you still have them of course. Just my opinion.

Sell with OEM you will get more for it then aftermarket. Trust me if I had my stockers for my last car the dealership would have given me about $500 more for it. If I had it all back to stock I could have gotten around $8k for it but I only got $6,500 because of the exhaust wheels and a few other things.

I just sold mine with my OEM wheels because the dealer wasn't going to give me any extra $ for my aftermarket wheels. I kept them and now they're my winter wheels. Worked out pretty good.

Although Carmax is very convenient, their pricing is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a good deal, and sometimes they low ball you. Having said that you might be better off selling private party, and I agree with the others selling with the OEM wheels. Also, I would try your dealer and talk to your motoring advisor. I don't see why they would not want to keep a loyal/repeat customer happy, especially in this economy. My reason for this is if you order the Countryman, you will more than likely have to pay MSRP. Since there will most likely be no wiggle room when ordering, you would think/hope they would give you a good deal on the trade in.

Explore your options

I have not been impressed with CarMax. I went to them to sell my 2008 Acura TSX and the price they quoted was insulting. Be sure to go on Edmunds.com and appraise your car first before you decide what you want to do. Best of luck.

And they'll turn around and sell it for a premium price. I went to CarMax once, and I though I was pricing out NEW cars.

Although selling your car yourself is more of a hassle than some people want to take on, it is ALWAYS the best way, if fair price is your goal.
Carmax will scalp you, as will any new car dealer should you trade it in, because they both have to clean up the car, and resell it at a considerable mark up.
MINIs are not hard cars to sell. Try Craigslist. Try the Classifieds here. Try driving around with a sign in your window.
Don't give it away to Carmax. And especially don't trade it in at your MINI dealer. You'll lose many hundreds of dollars...maybe more. (Just my opinion.)

My 2¢...I'd sell with factory wheels & tires if you sell to Carmax because they don't typically put the $$$ into the car for aftermarket items like rims. Tires have to be in good shape & car should be clean. We sold our F250 Amarillo edition there and got a good price for it. We may have gotten a little more by doing it ourselves but our reasons not to go private party were:

1) Tire kickers
2) Test drivers
3) So much bank check fraud - not even cashier's checks are safe
4) Funds are held and the new owner has the car
5) Ease of transaction and fair price offered by Carmax

If they'd low-balled us we would have dealt with the hassle of selling outright but just not worth it to us. Keep your wheels & sell them on here, Craigslist, e-bay etc. You've got time to decide...good luck!
