15" tire options - a shrinking set of choices?

I just spent the past hour over lunch searching out 15" tire options and it appears that for performance all-season tires, the number of choices/widths offered in 15" tires has diminished significantly since this thread was populated:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...mendation.html

My optimal choice would have been in a 205/55-15, but only Bridgestone Potenza RE92s (@$200+ per tire!) and Kumho Ecsta ASX are now available options for that size. Even if I wanted to go with the latter, my vendor of choice doesn't have it, though they appear amenable to 'try' and bring it in.

Next up would have been 185/60-15 tire size, which has available:
General Altimax HP
Kumho Solus KH25

And then there's a wealth of options in 195/60-15...unless, of course, you want the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S. Notice the missing size on this list of available sizes:

Anyway, if you want all the options, it appears that Tire Rack is the place to shop. I'm gonna settle on goodyear eagle GTs this time around since the whole deal - tires, mounted and balanced on a set of konig feathers - comes to a satanic $666 delivered.

Cheers,

--Rich

I am looking for a set as well to replace my stock Conti's.
Have run pretty much all brands of tires on previous cars but never had Yokohama's.
Anyone have any experience with the AVID ENVigor? ... looks pretty highly rated and priced right.

You might try Goodyear Assurance M/S P195/60R15 87H. Thats what I have on my MINI and they are handling great. I got them about 44,000 miles ago and they still seem to have about half the tread life left in them.

Any reason you wouldn't want to upgrade to high performance or ultra high performance tires? The ride, handling, etc...is awesome on the Kumho ASX. Price is also good. The Falken Ziex 512 is a good choice too!

This would be my choice for a 15" tire option. Yokohama S.Drive 205/55

I know my post was long, but in there is the fact that the Kumho ASX isn't available from my vendor w/o special ordering/possibly waiting w/o results. I need something right now since I've been slipping around all winter on a set of summer tires. The mixed reviews on the Falken kept me from considering that tire, especially since there were many others in the 195/60 size that showed much better performance. Probably would have gone with the Falken, though, if it were offered in a 205/55.

Yeah, I was looking for an all season tire in that size...my car is a daily driver and actually gets the most use from Fall through Spring since I ride motorcycles when the weather is nice.

I guess my post had more to do with that fact that the options for the 205/55 section AS tires have dried up since that thread in Aug. 2007. Neither of the tires below are made in that size any longer...

Quote - Minihune, 8/2007:
"205/55-15 is the best size for comfort and tire selection.

In High Performance All Season tires-
Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S Ride Comfort 9.0 $123 400 treadwear V speed rated
Yokohama AVID V4S Ride Comfort 8.6 $75 500 treadwear V speed rated"

Had the same dilemma 6 months ago: my front Contis were bald when I got a flat in the rear. No local shops stocks any selection of the OEM sized 175s. I inquired w/TR about the Envigors vs the Generals (195/60/15). TR suggested Sumi HTR A/s P01s (i think, the newer Sumis). After 6 months, no discernible wear yet. Significantly quieter, slightly softer riding yet significantly grippier than the Contis. Mileage took a slight dip. Very happy thus far. Weird thing was, when first installed, felt like riding on marshmallows.

Yeah, not many choices for 15s. Good thing is all the choices are cheap.
