235/40R17 on 17x7.5 et40? Trim fender?

I have a 2008 R56 MCS with NM lowering springs. I'm in need of a summer
set up of wheels/tires/TPMS.

Here's what i'm thinking about going with...

17x7.5 Kazera KZ-D with offset of 40mm.

235/40ZR17 Yoko S.drive

I've been pestering Alex@Tirerack and he's concerned the +40 offset will possible rub on the outside rear fender.

I know a bunch of you guys have run similar setups. I want to fit the 235's but i'm not excited about spending more for a 17x7.5 +45 wheel.

Thanks for any feedback!

Most 235's that I have seen on minis have been on an 8" wheel, which is actually the minimun they are specified for.

The 235's on 7.5" rims isn't really a concern. It's a fitment that looks to be common outside the MINI universe.

I'm really just concerned with the 40mm offset and if it will cause problems.

seriously... is anyone running 17x7.5 +40s?

/OK... maybe the question was a little too specific...

for guys running 235/40R17, what size wheels are you using 7.5" or 8"?

Alex (if you're monitoring this), how can i view what 17x8 wheels TR stocks? When I type In that I have a MINI, the widest options given are 7.5". I want to order a package ASAP... please help me out here!

Is my math right that 17x7.5 +40mm should have less clearance issues then the guys running +37mm?

Thanks.

I don't have anything in 17x8 4-100. We had a Motegi tracklite but its been discontinued.

RatRacer - I saw those wheels you mentioned on Tire Rack...that is an awsome deal....can see why you want to order asap...because they likely won't last!

Just as Alex said...could "possible" rub, so you'd be takin' a chance...(probably will)

..very likely some folks do run this set up..with same suspension mods/low as you...but from what I've read...it can still vary from Mini to Mini.

If I were gonna try & do that, I'd order just the wheels...then take to a local tire shop & see how close it is looking with tire mounted up.

..they did this for me at one of those "discount" places...mounted up a tire...I said it looked to bulgy...and they switched it for next size down right away no problem...(not sure if is their normal practice) but they want return customers...so...

...will likely cost more than Tire Rack though...

Most are 44 or 45 offset, but who knows it might work. Ask Mach V what he has tried out. Or as someone else suggested, just buy them and have a shop mount 235/40-17 if it does not work then go 215/40-17.

Those do not exist, at least at this time, in 17x8 4x100.

Going to have TR ship out one mounted tire. If it doesn't work for my car, i'm only out shipping +15 bucks to de-mount.

I could be missing something here, but in the link below, Outmotoring is saying
"We have confirmed that a 17x8, 38mm WILL fit on a gen2 MINI (R56, etc) "
here

...then a +40mm on a narrower rim should fit alright.

I'll let you guys know if it fits. $79 bucks for a 17x7.5 wheel that's <20lbs is hard to pass up. here's a link to the wheels

compared to a 17x8et38, the 17x7.5et40 will sit inward about 8mm for fender clearance, and you will have 3-4mm more strut clearance.

I would mount and check fitment on front and rear.
Let us know the results, better yet pics of front and rear.

Got the test wheel/tire in today. To reiterate, the car is a 2008 MCS with NM Engineering springs.

Wheels
17x7.5 Kazera KZ-D with offset of 40mm. - $79 per

Tires
235/40ZR17 Yoko S.drive - $122 per

Mounted rear. rolled car forward - back to settle springs. bounced on bumper (ouch) to test under compression.

RESULT: tight. but acceptable. worst case will be minor touching under full compression. a touch of a Dremel might be prudent.

Mounted front. rolled car forward - back to settle springs. bounced on hood to test under compression.

RESULT: the tire touches the inner felt on full lock to the right. otherwise clears.

I'm feeling good enough about the fit to have the rest shipped.

For anyone who wanted to go conservative, these wheels plus 215's would be a safe bet. At $79/wheel it's tough to beat.

I'll post pics and clearance details with all 4 installed sometime next week.

RatRacer - that's cool, glad to hear that wheels/tires combo are going to work with your setup (with maybe some minor trimming)

..again, a very good deal, we look forward to pics when they are all mounted up!

..I was actually considering to order those wheels, then just wait till later to find some deals on tires, ..but I see on T/R it looks like they are maybe aleady sold out ..oh well...look forward to seeing yours on car!

see above. It fit, but not a lot of wiggle room.

I would actual be hesitant to go with the +45 offset. not a lot of clearance to the strut in front or the big chunky aluminum arm in the rear.

Right... vewing on a droid, and I missed that part!

My new wheels are 17x7.5 et35, so a 235/40 star spec might be too much...

It's a lot of rubber. +35 would put the wheel arch over the tread block on the yokos and probably move the clearance from 'rub' to 'smash'.

What size tires are you going with? I run 215's as snow tires on my stock 17x7 wheels (i think their +48mm?) and there a ton of room (relatively speaking).

I'd like to run 235/40/17 Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs, but I might have to step down to a 215/40/17. The two other tire sizes they offer, 215/45 and 225/45 don't really appeal to me.

A 225/40 would be perfect, but nobody makes a decent tire in that size

I'm wondering if I have enough negative camber to suck up the 235's. I'm running KW coil overs with some pretty respectable camber angles. Would you say the front or the rear was a tighter fitment?

give me a couple of days to get them on and i'll let you know...

After hitting a few big time bumps on my way to work, I'm hoping my driveway assessment (actually driving would have made the tires un-returnable), holds up when driving.

FWIW, just confirming 225/45-17's

do fit on OEM 7's on an R56 w/ no rubbing. First trouble spot to me looks like it would be on inside sidewall at the front struts. Not much room left there, certainly nt enough for cable chains for example.

In my case using Michelin PS2's. I did notice some tires in the same nominal width, including the well regarded Conti all seasons are meaningfully wider at the sidewall bulge even if the tread is about the same, so I steered away from those while still focusing on performance and weight of tire. Regardless of size you go with, you might look at the sidewall width spec where available; you may find some differences that matter if you interference points involve the sidewalls. Also as you move to 7 1/2 and 8" rims width, that bulge is probably going to widen yet a bit more with tires fit to the given now wider rim. Not much choice than to do so though at you go to 235's in lower profiles, at least to stay w/in the usual tire mfr. spec's.
