When I ordered the tires online I got a call from a rep saying that there was a warning as stated above that there may be modifications needed with a wheel having a 42 offset (which he said was the OEM 17 inch wheel). The "may be needed" part of the warning is why I posted here. To find out if it is always necessary.

I had a little rubbing (make that very little, and in the rear only) on the plastic wheel well liner with my 215/45x17 S-03s on 17x7.5 SSR Comps and the SSRs have a 42mm offset. However, the OEM 17" wheel DOES NOT have a 42mm offset; I believe it's 50mm.

This is the problem I am having. I have the same wheels with the same size tires. When I have passengers in the back I get some rubbing on the rear wheels when going over free way dips and such. What did you do to correct this if anything?
One more question is the larger the offset the further out the wheels will be from the axel? So a 50 mm offset will sick out farther than a 42 mm offset? Or is it the opposite the bigger the offset the further in toward the axel the wheel will be???

I added adjustable rear control arms (H-Sport). -1.6 degrees camber was all it took, and a little neg camber in the rear improves handling. Too much and you have to worry about uneven tire wear, but I have about 15K miles without rotation and the wear seems to be even. Besides, you can eliminate the possibility of excessive uneven wear by rotating front to back every 3-5K miles.

It depends on the type of offset - positive or negative - click here for The Tire Rack's description and a diagram - our MINI's wheels have positive offset. For positive offset wheels with the same width, the higher the number, the more room between the outer rim and the wheel arch.

Yup, 50mm. You can find the info in the second sticky thread at the top of the Tires, Wheels, & Brakes Forum - it's called "wheel weight and offset / tire weight" - therein you'll find another link for "OE wheels."

The higher the offset, ie, 50 is higher than 42, then the more the wheel and tire are pushed inward towards the inside of the wheel well. The lower the offset, ie, 42 is lower than 50, then the more the wheel and tire are pushed outward towards the outside of the wheel well. For example, a 55 offset (if you can find any wheel with this) will rub on the inside part of the wheel well -- the side that the brakes are on. And a 30 offset (if you can find such a wheel) will rub on the outside part of the wheel well -- as the tires are pushed to the outside of the car. Hope that makes sense. :smile:
