17x9 4X100/114.3 +20MM?
Yes I'm a noob. Just got a 2011 Cooper S about a month ago and loving it. I been looking around the forums ever since I got it and finally decided to join the community. Anyways, is it even possible to fit 17x9 4X100/114.3 +20MM? Also, what does it mean by /114.3 +20MM? Sorry for being such a noob, still learning all this stuff.

The 100/114.3 likely means it's dual-drilled for both bolt patterns. So it'll have holes for both 4x100 and 4x114.3. The mini (r56/r53) uses a 4x100 bolt pattern. As far as fitting a 17x9 et20... If you have to ask it's probably not the fitment for you. It would require a lot of effort and even then questionable as to whether it would fit. 17x8 is a much safer and better documented fitment if you're looking for wide wheels.

I've seen people mention 17x9s on a R56 but I've not actually ever seen one in person of pictures of the fitment. I have to imagine you wouldn't be able to lower the car much and you'd have to run some pretty stretched tires.

You can use a 17x9" et20 rim but what tire and suspension do you plan to use?
If you use OEM suspension there will be a wheel gap, a smaller tire diameter tire size like 205/40-17 or 215/40-17 will increase this gap while a taller tire like 225/45-17 will be tight to fit due to it's wide tread width on a very wide wheel.
For looks, many owners will install fully adjustable coilovers. You can adjust ride height from a small to a large drop.
Using a wide tire that will fit a 17x9" wheel you can consider:
235/40-17 fits 8-9.5" wide wheels, perfect for 8.5", 24 lbs, 24.3" tire diam.
245/40-17 fits 8-9.5" wide wheels, perfect for 8.5", 26 lbs, 24.7" tire diam.
Tire stretch is used partly for looks and adds room for clearance using an extra wide rim with a dropped suspension. Most times the stretched tire will have a smaller tire diameter from being stretch fitted to a wide rim.
Examples of tire sizes for a 17x9" rim stretched:
205/40-17 fits 7-8" wide wheels, perfect for 7.5", 20 lbs, 23.5" tire diam.
205/45-17 fits 6.5-7.5" wide wheels, perfect for 7", 22 lbs, 24.3" tire diam.
215/40-17 fits 7-8.5" wide wheels, perfect for 7.5", 22 lbs, 23.8" tire diam.
215/45-17 fits 7-8" wide wheels, perfect for 7", 23 lbs, 24.7" tire diam.
These tire sizes are all available (with tire weights for each size for comparison) using Yokohama S.Drive (Ultra High Performance Summer tire)
300 treadwear. Tire is suitable for stretching and/or street use.
Before you buy look at examples of how the 17x9 wheel with whatever tire size will fit and look on your MINI.
Here is an R56 Cooper S with 16x9" et25 front and rear with stretched tires.
With that suspension drop, a normal tire size would rub. Using more negative camber and a stretched tire help to tuck the tread areas under the wheel arches. Some removal of the wheel arch plastic using a dremmel tool can also help you gain some clearance. See if you rub then grind away the plastic.
Front negative camber can be increased with adjustable front camber plates, rear camber can be adjusted with rear lower control arms.
By comparison to this picture, a 17x9" et25 wheel would be about 5 mm farther from the inner suspension, and poke out 5mm more (assuming this MINI is not running wheel spacers).
In any event 17x9" et20 wheels can fit with the right tire size.

And there are more examples of 17x9 that fit.
If you are going to keep the OEM suspension then the wider tires-
235/40-17 or 245/40-17 fit and will clear the suspension. More negative front and rear camber will help to tilt the tire inward so it doesn't look too wide,

Here the R53 Cooper S owner used 17x8 et45. The fronts fit OK with 235/40-17 (slight rub) but the rears rubbed due to the dropped suspension using lowering springs.

The OEM MINI wheel is 17x7" offset (et) of +48mm. OEM tire is 205/45-17.

215/40-17 fits 7-8.5" wide wheels, perfect for 7.5", 22 lbs, 23.8" tire diam.
