Go for some narrow winter tires, wheel size shouldn't matter.

I've been having serious trouble finding steel wheels that'll fit the MINI...
Either 15 or 16". I've called around, and no one seems to have any.
The cheapest alloys I've found are $89, through Discount Tire Direct.
I may end up going with them if nothing else works out.

I really wanted Nokian Hakkapelitta snow tires, but sizing for the MINI
also seems to be a problem. I had a set of Blizzaks on my previous
car, and was not terribly impressed. I have the tire gurus at Greer
Enterprises working on the problem for me, they're supposed to call me
tomorrow to see if they can work anything out. I guess if all else fails
I'll either go with the Blizzaks or try my luck with some Semperits or
something. I'll post if I get any useful info tomorrow.

Good Luck,
-Pete

I don't know what anyone else thinks about them, but - on Consumer Reports advice - I got a set of Kumho I'zens for my wife's car. (I was also going to get them for Molly, but another deal worked out for someone's 8-spoke 15" takeoffs.) The Kumho's seem to be geared toward moderate snow, with mostly slushy, wet roads. That's more or less what I deal with. They are a great price, and the "winter" rubber compound goes 100% of the tread, not like a lot of the winter tires out there that only go ~50%.

On Discount Tire Direct you should be able to use the Unique brand 4-100 steelie priced at $36 for the 15". That was my option before I found the take-offs.

OK..straight from the Horses Mouth regarding steel wheel winter tire packages.
This is from my dealer in Yaletown Vancover.

""As for winter tires I have a 15" steel wheel tire package with Michelin
alpin and mini wheel covers for $999.95 or $899.95 without the wheel covers.
I also have 16" snows on style 83 (5 spoke mags) for $1600 (non run flat)
and I have a 16" snow on the same mags which are run flats for $1980.
Keep in mind that if you go with a non run flat you should have some kind of
mobility kit."

Any questions, i think not!

thanks
Bill

I got a set of Blizzaks (15&quot and steel wheels from the Tire Rack for about $500 including mount & balance, and shipping. I'm sure you could get any tire you want if you don't like the Bridgestones... The wheels were $35.00 each  I was surprised how well the car did in the snow with the 17" Goodyear all season tires. With the snow tires, it is really good
Cheers!

Do the 15" Steel wheels look good ?. How's the ride on dry roads ?. I'm thinking of getting a set too.

I have 15" steel wheels that a local shop ordered from tirerack. The first set of wheels that arrived wouldn't clear the front brakes, so they got sent back. The second set has been on my car for a few weeks. I'm not sure if these are the final, official, correct wheels (dan@tirerack, want to verify for me?) Here's all the stuff that appears on the wheels:

KFZ 8135
KBA 47373 90
6Jx15 H2 ET45
2150650 03 (the 03 is inside a circle)

Nothing is obviously wrong with them, so who knows, they just might be the right ones
And here's why I need them (and snow tires):

I'm going to get some cheap alloy rims for my winter wheels. I can't stand the thought of putting those ugly steel wheels on my beautiful MCS!

I just got the Blizzaks and steel wheels from Tire Rack. I also got the wheel covers. Looks pretty good - not as nice as alloys, but who wants to run alloys in the salt and crud of winter. Overall a very nice package for the money.
