Michelin Pilot Super Sport on Track

Hi Guys

Did anyone of you actually track his/her MPSS?

I suspect, they're one of the greatest Road Tires but won't last much punishing
on track.
Not sure if i want to drive Sport Cup 2 on a daily basis...
I'quite happy about their performance, even in the rain, but why not aim higher?

Right now, i drive Federal 595 RS-R 215/40 R17 Road and Track...
... With a Quaife ATB and Eiback PRo Kit / JCW Dampers & rear Sway Bar

Cheers Harry

they are not even the same class as a 200 tread wear autocross tire like the RE71R, let alone a race tire

I'd go for the RE71R, but they are not allowed in Switzerland :-/

But - have you driven the MPSS?

I didn't take them on a track, but I did have them on The Dragon and that's kind of the same thing ;-P and they're a fantastic tire. SUPER grippy, you won't be disappointed. A racing tire will be better for a track of course, but the SS's will do just fine.

the SS's will do just fine.
Depending on your alignment and driving style. Factory alignment had lead to blistering and uneven tread wear. This is exacerbated further by sliding or over driving.

You may be better off with tires like the Hankook RS-3 or better yet the Yokohama AD-08R for street tires with more track readiness. Both are E-code rated.

I had PSS's on the track at the last MINI Thunder. Here's of pic of the LR after one of the sessions.

Nice Told ya they are grippy. I've seen full on race tires look worse than that after a practice session as well, same goes for AD08's accept instead of the outside edge, you get that kinda all over the tire.

I have multiple track days on my 215x45-17 PSS, they do a great job. Not as good as a dedicated track tire obviously but really amazing for a tire that you can also use as a daily driver, which I do. They need to warm up a bit to get the full grip (like any tire), so take it easy for the first lap. I have found that all the ugly looking stuff on the tires after a track day that makes it look like your tires melted is rubber picked up from the track, it wears off after a few days.

Ideally I'd have a set of track wheels/tires, but until I have the $ for that I have to get along with just one set of tires and the MPSS is a fine choice. I am lowered a bit on Ohlins and set up for -2 deg camber all around, I rotate the tires about every 5000 miles and don't have any issue with uneven wear. They are absolutely great on the road dry or wet. My set is almost worn out, about to get another.

Having been to the Dragon and Homestead speedway I can say they are not the same thing.

I took regular Federal 595's to the dragon (205/45-17) and they were not quite enough for Dragon

I've been on the good Federals, 595 RSR for several autocrosses and they nearly hung with the 200TW tires 2 years ago. They haven't had any changes to my knowledge so the new 200TW leaders (Bridgestone RE71 and BFG Rival S) would likely put it to shame.

That said, I actually bought a used set of Michelin PSS with the intention of taking them to Sebring track. The most common complaint I've seen on Federal 595 RSR is they overheat quickly. Most common complaint on PSS seems to be they chunk with a bit of overdriving. This would lead me to believe I need more camber before the track day.

Most important thing that the PSS may have over other Max performance summer tire is the sidewall strength of an extreme performance tire.

I'm driving with 1° camber and i managed to make my Federals look like that

which seems ok after a track day. i lost about 2mm

I'd say sidewall strength on federals is enormous, don't you agree?

But i think i really wanna try the PSS. Just out of curiosity.

this was the track i've been:
first track day, no Quaife then and ESP on.
the tires got quite cheesy after 5 or 6 spirited laps.

Interesting hovever, this year, same track, 4 sec faster, the tires looked different, the excess rubber got scrubbed off because of the Quaife maybe or in the rain later that day.

I'd like to see the front. For a rear that doesn't look so promising.

Looks like they just want more camber. See how much more the outside is worn than inside?

I highly doubt the PSS would keep up with RSRs.

the wear on the inside is an optical illusion, i measured pretty much the same depth, but the scrub is off on the inner half.

i think having more connected blocks or almost solid surfaces helps a lot in terms of wearing...?

Usually does in terms of chunking. I had a bit of a chunking problem when running Toyo R1R's. I expect it would be even more of an issue with PSS.

I will add that is picked up when your tires are hot and you are slowing down to exit the track. Scares many a first-time r-comp or race tire autocrosser venturing out in hot weather later in the day. F1 drivers used to drive in the marbles on their cool down lap to help make minimum post-race weight.

Also scary the first time that stuff comes off during your first hot lap of your next session, smacks the side of your car and your tire goes out of balance

A lap later all is better.

I have seen that on my ZIIs, RE71Rs and R888s. A tire shop I go to gets really impressed when they see that stuff. They think it is really neat that I melted the tires.

Tires tend to wear better with less tread.

Nice track video and nice looking "MINI" you were on.

Can you get any 200 wear rated tires like the Dunlop ZII Star Spec tires?

True. The R1R's wore better when shaved; supposedly didn't chunk.

Hi guys
I recently got the PSS and i love them. Besides Grip in the Dry, they're impressive in the wet.
Compared to the Feder 595 RS-R, they're a fair amount less stiff in the sidewalls, wich makes the initial turn-in kinda less agressive.
But anyways, it has so much more capabilities in terms of adapting to uneven pavement.
All in all, an excellent choice for the sporty daily driver.

What pressure do you guys use on them? So far, i found 34-35PSI quite good (2.4Bar)

Cheers Harry
