Choosing a Toyo

I want to replace my 16" Goodyear Run-flats with 17" Toyo Proxes 4. The dimension of my Goodyears is 195/55 R16. Would a Toyo Proxes 4 measuring 205/45 ZR17 88W be a good replacement?

Thanks.

That size should work just fine as far as overall diameter.

Here's a place where you can check to see how the sizes compare.

Accoring to this: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

The new tire is less than 1% shorter in height, so you can't really go wrong with that new size, as long as you use a wheel with a mild offset.

I'm running 215/40 x 17 and I like the way it handles. But in either case (40 or 45), the ride is much stiffer, and most 40s are technically not rated for the weight, but work fine as long as you run enough pressure.

Can you get toyo t1-s's? They are great tires and very light.

Just a thought,

For street driving the Proxes 4 in that size should work fine and be less expensive than the T1-S (more of a performance tire- better if you were going to autocross).

I wouldn't take a T1-S for autocross. The thinner tread blocks look like they would die without being shaved on my M. Although they are more expensive than getting the 4's, if you are getting new tires I'm 100% convinced there is no better upgrade that you can make than a max performance tire for the summer.

Just to give an idea of traction between a max performance tire (like the t1-s) and ultra high performance tires... when I switched from 265/40/17 Kumho 712's to the same size Toyo T1-S's I could no longer spin my rear tires on the BMW from first, through second, and into third. My favorite U onramp saw cornering speeds increase by 2-3mph (with more to go on the new T1-S's).

The difference between the tires was as great as adding a new suspension and enough to make me NEVER skimp on Ultimate performance dry/rain tires again.

Max performance let you push your car harder. If you end up skimping on tires you have a lower performing car no question, might as well not get a sporty/sports car.
