R53 14mm lug issue... looking for reccomendations.

Hi all, longtime lurker and finally made the jump to making an account. I’ve gotten great info on this forum in the past, and I’m hoping for some guidance/ recommendations.

My 06 MCS has the 14mm lugs and I didn’t realize this until I ordered 4 new wheel bearings and rotors for a bit of an overhaul which of course are all 12mm. My question is this: is it possible to use new 12mm lugs to match the rotors/bearing assy’s and not have an issue with the wheels which are 14mm? Would I be better off drilling out and tapping?

thanks in advance!

Can you ask your vendor if they can swap your parts for the correct size ones perhaps with a restocking fee? Put the right parts in rather than modify the wrong parts.

You might try contacting Way from Waymotorworks and ask this question.

The cost is pretty high for the 14mm hubs/rotors, also it seems to me to make more sense to have 12mm lugs. Wheel options...etc. I’m thinking the current wheels should be fine as the contact point for the lugs is the flared portion (same size 14mm/12mm) as opposed to the shank.

They make 14 to 12 conversion stud kits (short end into hub is 14 mm), but I haven't seen any 12 to 14 stud adapters.

One solution would be to use a hybrid lug bolt (M12 x 1.5 threads, but R14 ball on the end of the bolt.

Here's a link:

First check if the end of a regular 12 mm bolt has the appropriate shape similar to the 14 mm bolts that you currently use with the wheels.
You might get by cheaper if this is the case.

Yes, you can do that. It is no problem to use 12mm lugs with wheels that have 14mm lug holes. In fact, even though 2002 to mid-2006 used 12mm lugs, the OEM wheels of those years actually had holes large enough for 14mm (people have been using the older wheels on newer MINIs).
