you are best off spending the $ with a body shop....you'll get better results...if you are stuck on doing it your self make sure you sand then really well....prime, and then paint...and after you paint the black...use a laqure to "clear" it....
as for the paint types.... again if you are going to do it your self....go to a paint shop and do some research on spray paints...fint out which ones are for metal etc....
you can get very nice results...if you take your time....I still recomend having it done "professionally" if you have someone you trust

Assuming you have a sprayer. I would add to what TULS said that dust and dirt contamination will be you biggest pitfalls. you must make sure it is clean and use a tack rag. If you don't have a booth do it in the morning with no wind. I have used alot of dupont products in the past so that is what I recomend. Dupont Lucite for the gloss coat. I don't do any of that anymore so there may be better products out there. I now use a FUJI HVLP sprayer for my woodworking hobbie so I dont remember the exact numbers on the dupont products but in the end it will be cheaper to go have someone else do it.

If you mount non runflats you're likely to be at less risk for damaging the rims than if you use runflats.
A clear coat for durability would be worth a lot and keeping brake dust off the wheels with EBC green pads or Miltex Redbox pads would be recommended. The stock pads dust too much and if not cleaned off regularly will harm the finish.

BBM (in Emeryville) does rim painting in powder coat or body paint... I think powder coat was ~70$ each where as body paint (glossy) was ~115$ each. I had inquired with Jaques at the last Pulley Party since they had some custom painted rims on some cars.
