JCW Brakes and SSR Comps

JCW Brakes and SSR Comps

Hey Gang,

Doing a little day dreaming, long-range upgrade planning and was curious to know if anyone knows if SSR Comps in the smaller sizes (15x7, 16x6.5, 16x7, 16x7.5) will clear the JCW brake kit. I'm guessing the 17 wouldn't have a problem (correct me if I'm wrong!) as the the kit isn't dramatically larger than stock but as only certain OEM 16" wheels will work, I wondered if any of the smaller SSRs might have a problem?

I like the idea of a 16x7 SSR with a 205/50 non-runflat with the Works calipers peeking out from behind...not tracking the car so BBKs aren't really essential for me.

The SSR's tend to have excellent caliper clearance, so I'm sure the 16x7 would work. The 16x6.5, I'm not as positive about.

Agreed. When your long-range planning gets closer to implementation, you'll need solid answers. If you don't have them by then, Alex could help. Especially if you're considering helping him to make a living

Right on Brother! I always try to support those that support the community! Can you imagine how many calls Alex must get that are a complete waste of time!? I don't need him to subsidize my day dreaming...of course I don't mind taking a moment of a fellow day dreamer who may have put their plan into action...:smile:

Incidentally, you are going to so love the SSR Comps on your MINI. Great looks and noticeable performance gains. I might event go as far as buying the brakes to fit the wheels. Then again, I couldn't wait a minute to get the wheels, so that investment now sort of dictates what I can do around brakes.

Calipers don't "peek out" from behind SSR comps.

I'm running 16x7's and my Wilwood calipers are hanging out in the open for the world to see.

Truly, these are great wheels, and the JCW brakes will probably be a fantastic complement to them.

A larger kit (Wilwood, StopTech, Brembo, etc.) is almost too much for Comps.

Which Wilwood kit did you get? Source? And what do you mean by "too much for Comps"? I'm on 17" Comps. Are you saying it looks wrong somehow?

I got the 12.2" stock kit. By "too much for comps", I mean that the wheels weigh too little, and thus carry too little momentum into braking. The pads grab the rotors, and the wheels just stop. The car may or may not have stopped, but they wheel has. That puts a ton of pressure on the tire to keep the wheel turning. If the tires are worn, ABS engages, and the ride gets real bumpy.

Pardon my lack of knowledge of the proper physics terms, but I think that's a relatively apt description. My wheel / tire combo weighs 22.5lbs / corner. Having a wheel that just weighed *a little bit* more would probably keep this tendency in check, but would really cut down on bragging rights!

The Comp wheel is by far one of the most Big Brake friendly wheel on the market. Spoke shape as sooo much to do with this. More so than diameter.

Later in this thread, you responded that you are running the 12.19" rotors; are you running just the SSR Competition wheel in 16 x 7 with no spacers? Also what tires (brand/model and size)? Any clearance problems with the wheel well liner? Have you lowered your car?

Yes, but I will need 5mm spacers to put the stock R83's back on for Winter.

The 215 section-width does cause rubbing in the rear, but also brings the tires in perfect visual alignment with the black wheel-well trim. The rubbing is not significant, and causes no damage to the tires. I only get the rubbing on very hard bumps (like when the road rises sharply) or when there's somebody in the back seat.

H-Sport springs lower the car by about 3/4" all the way around.

And she handles like a beast. I can accelerate almost as well as a stock MCS. Our club went for a very spirited drive yesterday, and I had no trouble keeping up with the S drivers -- in fact, I had to be careful with braking to make sure they didn't hit me.
