profile matters 1st b4 width
17's u need to be right at 225 but it depends on what tyre u choose & whether u want a slight strech or not, to get rid of that ugly tyre bulge but w/16's u could do 215's i dont see why not(tyre bulge will not allow u to get closer to the ground as far as drop goes.
Toyo tyres has a good guide on their web site they show all of the measurements on there that u could possibly need
-price dood ur looking at such a wide spectrum that it jus depends on what brand name u go for.......

tires handle corners better when it is slightly stretched than it its
slightly bulged... but yeh, it also helps clear your fender if you are
running wide wheels with aggressive offset for those wheels.
i saw a benz coupe running some wide tires on factory wheels to
try to get that flush look... man it looked like crap. i bet it even
handles like crap. that's wat happens when people who have no
idea how to setup a car tries to do something.

another thing i noticed running wider tread is that it feels like it might have slowed the car down A bit due to drag cuz of the increased contact patch plus im running sticky Proxes4 rubber so ill b swapping them out for 205's 40 on a 7.5 wide rims (17's). might b pushin' it but will see
after the side walls wore down a bit it feels better... but could jus have gotten use to it!

My best guess would be that you need to go with a 35mm offset with the 8" rim. If you don't change the offset, you could use wheel spacers to gain clearence. But that is really a backwards way to do it.
As far as what width tire, just look thru the tirerrack.com site. They list what tires fit what rim width. They also list the diameter of the tires. Find something that is close to 24" diameter and then the speedo and odometer will stay accurate. If you go much bigger you will riun into fit problems inside the wheel well.
The height of the sidewall is expressed as a percentage of the tread width. So, a 35 series tire that is 205 wide is 2.8". A 35 series tire that is 235 wide has a sidewall of 3.2". The standard 195/55-16 sidewall is 4.2".
To achieve a 24" diameter with an 8" rim width may not require you to use a 35 series tire. Especially if you will be running 16" rims.
Another choice would be to order some two or three piece wheels with the exact diameter, width, and offset you want.

thanks man. good info. i definetly would not want to have to put wheel spacers on. if i can get them to fit right up that would be n ice. my buddy with the 10" rims had to get spacers but im not going that route. and yeah custom rims would be nice but i dont know if i have the money or paitence for that. ya know

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 $89 each 280 tread wear 21 lbs. (tirerack.com)
Toyo Proxes T1S $109 each 23" outer tire diameter 280 tread wear 19lbs
Falken Ziex ZE-512 $74 each 360 tread wear 19.4 lbs
(tread width 8.2" with 8" rim)
Your selection of tires is much better in 215/40-16 or 215/45-16.
If your budget allows-
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 in 215/40-16 for $131 each and $75 free gas offer
22.8" outer tire diameter, 19 lbs, 7.5" tread width with 8" rim.
For 17x8" rim
215/40-17 and 215/45-17 give the best selection and fit the MINI.
225/45-17 runs taller than stock so lowered suspension often leads to trimming the wheel wells.
225/40-17 isn't available.
