35/ Summer vs. 40/ All Season
Hey, everyone.
I currently have a set of 225/35/18 Goodyear F1 GS-D3's on the car.
I'm looking for a sporty tire that might see a couple days of light snow, and one that I can get at least 20K out of for longer road trips.
The PZero Nero M+S is my current pick, but I haven't tried them before. Anyone agree/disagree?
Also, would I notice much comfort difference between my 225/35/18 F1's, and a 215/35/18 Nero M+S? Or, do I need to go to a 215/40/17 to get the 40 series?
Thanks.
Zack

The Pirelli PZero Nero M+S is a good choice. Talk to Alex@tirerack for more details.
For comfort it might depend a little on your roads.
215/35-18 400 tread rated A traction 20 pounds 24" outer diameter $134
215/40-18 400 tread rated A traction 23 pounds 24.8" outer diameter $129
I would say your 225/35-18 tires would be very similar to the 215/35-18 tires with the 215/40-18 being a little more comfortable for bumpy roads but also heavier by 3 pounds each and taller by 0.8". Your Goodyears are 24.2" tall and if you have a lowered suspension the 215/35-18 would be a good fit. If you have stock suspension then either would be fine.
The Avon Tech M550 has lower cost, more weight, good comfort and snow ratings but doesn't wear as long and doesn't come in the 215/35-18 size.
The Goodyear GS-D3 has comfort ratings about 8.5 vs the Pzero Nero comfort ratings of about 8.7.
See what Alex@tirerack says.

Oh, and I was actually thinking a 215/40/17 for the 40 series, vs an 18".
So, this brings up a diff question--would there be any other gains going to the 215/40/17, vs the 215/35/18?
A quick thought is maybe the extra sidewall deflection in the 40/17 would help with traction in bumpy corners. But, would steering response diminish that much?
Other pros/cons? Thanks, again.
