That's what I wasn't doing...I was trying to hold up the tire without resting it on the hub, and it wasn't working at all well. I'm almost tempted to run downstairs to swap out a wheel just to try your suggestion. Thanks.

hold the tire at the bottom, push towards the rotor while you turn
the wheel to align the lug holes. it's easier if you're using centering rings.
