Still looking for new BFG tires then eh? Buy mine. I am selling these..

They are only 2.5 weeks old, and I regret buying them, hence the sale.

PM me best offer.

Those are 215/45ZR17 BF Goodridge g-force Sports. 39psi cold.

I was just driving. Driving Driving Driving along. LA roads dood it.

Well, what did it doesnt really matter, bottom line is I have not changed the way I do anything, and that definitely didnt happen to my Pirellis.

This was my first time buying BFG, a brand I've been wanting for awhile because I was a BFG fanboy, but now I'm an ex BFG fanboy.

You sure you dont wanna buy em?

They only have 400 miles on them.

They nice and soft.... feels trick. Plus you dont have to worry about breaking them in.

Well, by spec, a 215/45/17 isn't the proper tire for the car. Manufacturer's spec is 205/45/17 (if you opt for 17). Again, all tires vary by profile, etc, but a 215/45 is 98.8mm sidewall vs. stock 92.2mm whereas a 215/40 is 86.0mm sidewall. A 215/45 results in a 7.1% taller sidewall than "proper" and a 215/40 gives a 6.9% shorter sidewall than stock.

In either case its a tradeoff of (potentially) more comfort/smoother ride with a taller profile - but more sidewall roll vs. a harsher ride but stiffer control with a lower profile. Much a matter of preference - but then again, both offer a bigger contact patch.

Hmmm... my g-force sports look nothing like that after a few months of use "just driving around". I guess those LA roads are made of something different than the New England roads. Or we have different definitions of "just driving".

As witness to the destruction, I have to say, regardless of your definition of "just driving," factory Pirelli runflats survived "just driving" over and over again without fail.

I was on the verge of BFG's, but went with my gut and got Yoko AVS ES100's (the choice of jinkies). I'm glad Matt was the guinea pig.

These tires failed miserably. You can make all the excuses you want about "just driving" but there are plenty of tires that handle "just driving" just fine.

Oh swell. Now I'm back to square one about tire shopping. Thanks. a. lot. Camelpilot, that looks like serious scrubbing on those tires. Do you do canyon roads?

Camelpilot perhaps you should take your tires in to a specialist and get a better explaination because yours makes no sense. Having raced for many years and had my tires inspected by race tire professionals I know they can tell you a lot about what is happening to cause unusual problems.

The shredding you have looks like the kind of cold tearing that happens at the race track under adverse conditions such as abrasive pavement with too stiff suspension and too high of tire pressure. How can run the center of a tire down almost to the wear bars in 400 miles? 39lbs is high. It is no wonder your centers are worn more than the sides.

I have about 5000 miles on my BFG Sports and I beat the hell out of them on the most abrasive back roads in Northern California and they are holding up great. Much better ride and stick and turning than the Pirellis that came on the car and the Dunlops that I took off before putting the BFG's on.

Camelpilot has cross posted about his tires on another board and has admitted to taking them to the track. What a kidder! G-Force Sports are still on my list, just not his.

They are excellent street tires thats for sure. Good tread pattern, and just a nice overrall look.

They grip and ride so much better than the Pirellis, but they affected the responsiveness of my car compared to my old runflats. I might try 215/40 next time.

McLeonard: Yes 39lb was probably too high, and there may be alot of other factors that caused the tires to do that. But the other brand of tires e.g. Toyo's that were there that day faired alot better than my BFGs. Because of that, I dont think I will buy BFG again.

So this:

I was just driving. Driving Driving Driving along. LA roads dood it.
is not entirely true then?

You didn't expect a "budget" performance tire to hold up to track day abuse, did you?

i had a pair of tires i used to auto-x with on my 87 supra turbo. i had a similiar effect on the outer and inner tread blocks on these tires... BUT they were sitting in a friends basement for about 4 years before i found them and put em to use.

for a NEW tire that should never happen. what tire pressures were you showing after coming off the track?? you must have been low 50s for those to melt like that.

You're right, I should rephrase that to "I was flying flying flying"

And yeah I expected them to. Didint know how badly budgeted they were. :(

Well, I wouldn't write off BFG for the track completely. You just need to step up their product line a bit. Remember the MINI-mania car that was at that magazine sponsered 4-cylinder tuner shootout? It was on BFG T/A KD tires (not KDW, KD). Those will hold up to track abuse just fine. But they cost something like twice as much as the g-force sport.

[edit - mini madness, mini mania, who can remember which is which?]

There were plenty of "budget" tires from Khumo, Yoko and Toyo at that event that day (flying, flying, flying). Many more "budget" than the BFG's. None of them looked like that.

Not that I don't think that these BFG's wouldn't be just fine for daily drivers, but given the choice of the market out there, I know I would pass for something else.

I've been through two sets of ES100's... and now, I am running BFG G-Force Sports in 205/45R16 and don't regret it at all. I run 32 psi and have roughly 11K miles on them - they still look brand new. I've even done fun runs on them during several autocross schools that I was instructing at, with no ill effects at all (being too lazy to drag the r-comps out for anything but autocross events).

After getting a measly 12K miles out of each set of ES100's, I can say that I am LOVING the BFG's. This is on a highly modded Cooper (head/cam, intake, exhaust, you name it) - and running -2.2 degrees of camber up front and -1.2 out back. I rotate them at every oil change, and to date, they are showing no signs of wear on the inside shoulders. IMHO, they're fantastic tires - a bit more skatey than the ES100's, but I'll trade that for what seems to be iron-like wear characteristics. In the dry, they're the equal of the ES100, IMHO, but do suffer a tad in the wet (but not a whole lot).

Well I have seen high quality race tires shred under the wrong combination of conditions such as when the tire pressure was to high, the suspension was too hard, the track surface was rough and the track temperature put them out side of their operating range and they were pushed hard. It doesn't really matter what happend to other tires on other cars if they weren't subject to the same set of conditions. I am going to the track this Friday with the BFGs and I'll see how they hold up. I check temp and condition after every session and if they start looking anything like that I'll be ending my day. But I expect them to hold up fine based on how much abuse they have taken already.

You cant really compare your 205/50 16's to my 215/45 17's nor your driving style to mine.

There is a slim chance that the shredding was due to the car lacking a good wheel alignment, but I'm not going to buy another set of BFG's to find out.

I still think that if the tread design was a little more track friendly they would not have fallen off, 39psi or not.

I'm sure the tires would last me another 20,000 miles if I drove like a daisy too. But I dont.

Enjoy your day at the track on Friday. I wish I could be there to run with you.
