Another one ditching RFs

Another one ditching RFs
It's time to replace the stock Goodyear A/S RF's on my 2005 MCS. Living in VT, I need to stick with all-season tires as I'm too lazy to deal with another set of rims or exchanging winter/summer tires.
I love the "on rails" driving of the stiff sidewalls of the RFs and I've read some comments about moving to a 45 series non-RF feeling less responsive. OTOH, I drive on potholed back roads, and the ride of the RF's is a threat to my fillings!
So, my question is this:
From the 205-45/17 RFs, which size of non-runflat relacement will give the best combination of handling and ride?
215-45/17 or 215-40/17 or just stay with the stock size?
And, of course, I'll be one of the endless stream of posters asking "which tire"?
At the moment, looking at the Avon M550 A/S, the ContiExtremeContact, the Bridgestone RE960AS (worth the extra $$??) or the Pirelli PZero Nero M/S.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and recommendations!
