New Rims/Tires need help....

Hi all...

First post so be gentle!!!

2006 MCS

I need new rims and tires...i am not sure of 15/16/17 or any other size. I do have one preference that the tires look wider than present when looking straight at the car...

What is the max tire size i can put if get 15's and will there be a clearance issue with ny queens potholes?

thanks

Well, I do know that 225's fit if the overall diameter isn't too big. If your ride height is stock, you should be able to get 225/45-16s on the stock wheels. 225/45-15s work fine on 15x7 Kosei K1s. So do 225/50-15s, with the addition of a 5mm spacer up front. Both of the 15" sizes noted are with a lowered car and increased negative camber. The 16" is on a totally stock 2006 MCS that belongs to an autocross friend.

I do know that 215/45-16s work well, stock suspension or lowered, stock wheels or 7.5" Kosei's.

All look notably wider than stock. For that matter, so do the 205/50-16's that fit on about any combination. I've got that size snow tires on stock X-lites, and street tires on 7.5" Kosei K1s. The 1" wider wheel stretches them out nicely.

If you are looking for a smoother ride and pothole resistance then 55 series tires would be a good bet.

If you use 15x7" rims then 205/55-15 is wide enough and will give you a decent selection of tires for street use at a reasonable price. 15x7 rims can be fairly lightweight and somewhat lower in cost. 225/45-15 and 225/50-15 will fit the rim but the selection of tires isn't very good for street use. Both are smaller than stock size in tire diameter which will affect your speedometer and odometer readings.

If you use 16" rims you can use either 50 or 55 series tires. Usually 205/50-16 on 16x7" rims.

If you use 17" rims you will be limited to 40 or 45 series tires such as 205/45-17 or 215/45-17 or 215/40-17. Given your potholes this is more risky to drive around and much less forgiving for damage to the rims, your tires, or your suspension. You do get nice cornering and fast turn in response. Rim weight can be more and usually price is more.
