Directionalty..a run flat as a spare?

Does anyone know if the stock 17" r.f.'s are sensitive to direction of rotation? I want to use one as a spare and of course it could end up running on the right side one time and the left the next...changing it's direction of rotation. ...Would a non r.f. make a better spare?

Shouldn't matter one bit.....unless it is a directional tire.

The OE dunlop can't run backwards, but the pirelli and goodyear can be run backwards.

First, my apologies for not knowing quite how to quote previous posts properly, but hopefully the above cut and paste will be good enough.

Secondly, with all due respect, I don't believe either of the above quotes are correct. The OE Dunlops are asymetrical but not directional (or unidirectional in some parlance). You'll notice that the same side of the tire is mounted on the outside for all four positions from the factory. So 2 tires are rotating in one direction and two tires are rotating in the other.

Also, any directional tire I have seen in the US has clear markings on the sidewall for proper direction of rotation; you won't find that on the OE Dunlops because they are not directional.

Since they aren't directional they can be rotated in the normal manner for front wheel drive cars. And, one would make a perfectly acceptable spare for any of the 4 possible locations for a failed tire

The OEM Dunlop 9000 tires on our 06 MCS (mounted on the stock 17" wheels" are directional and have an arrow on each tire to show the direction of rotation. I rotate them front to back about every 3500 miles.

You're right

Despite it clearly being stated in the original post I was still thinking of the 16" Dunlop 5000 DSST. The 9000s are unidirectional and should not be swapped from one side to the other under normal conditions.

Now, I'll just find someplace to sit down and pry my foot out of my mouth.

Shouldn't be much of a problem to run a spare directional tire backwards
in dry weather. In the wet, it would hydroplane more quickly than the
others, but you're not expected to push a spare tire to the limits anyway,
are you? If you're expecting it to be a replacement rather than a spare,
that's a different matter.

I wouldn't worry, this is northamericanmotoring. I think we all have a right to be correct in spirit, while being technically incorrect. That's what these posts are for. Well that and showing cool pics of rims and tyres .

We went through this with Goodyear Eagles at Bondurant many years ago. After some reluctance to say it, they agreed that dry weather conditions posed no problems for us on track. For obvious reasons they chose not to make to much of a hub-bub about it to the general public. It certainly helped in our getting more life out of the tires though!
