Look what happened to my tire

Travelling on the LIE on Saturday 10/21/06 on the way to see my brother at the Audi dealership I heard a loud bang and all most immediately the flat tire warning light came on, I continued on my merry way to my brothers work place and checked my right rear to confirm my suspicion that I had a flat, we put the car on the lift to find the leak and possible plug the spot and sure enough we found the spot, the hole was very large so I new that I would need a new tire.
My bother said that we could plug it to get me home so we did and then started to put air in only to find the real damage, whatever it was that puncture the tire went straight thru the rim, look at the size of the hole. I had to drive my brother's car home to get my snows, now I am ready for the winter, all four snows on the car.

Will have to call Alex and order new rim and tire.

WHOA!! That's crazy! After examining your pictures, I'm puzzled as to what could have done that. Perhaps it was a long rod, but what's weird is that if it was long enough to go through the tire AND the rim, it somehow managed to slide right back out. Anything other than a long piece of metal would have had some velocity on it to make it through the rim. I'm curious to know if you find anything loose in the tire when its taken off. Considering the size of the hole.... could it be a bullet hole? Were you driving over a bridge and maybe someone below was shooting a gun?

Just my wild guess

A bullet would likely have made it to the other side of the rim and through again especially if a rifle shot. Aluminum isn't that hard. Then again, it could have bounced out. Looks like a something was sticking up out of the road. The centrifugal force could have thrown most anything out which may have been the sound he heard rather than the initial puncture.

The local Goodyear Store here has a large plastic container of the things they've removed from tires in their shop. You'd be amazed.

Is the hole on your rim on the inside or outside of the wheel. If inside then I don't how a bullet could do that. I agree...strange things are floating about loose on the roads these days. I had an encounter myself once w/ a blunt rod that ruined a tire...had to replace it.

If you were here in DC, I'd say for certain you were shot. Take the tire and wheel to the police department. I think their crime lab would be interested. Anything attached to the road surface long enough to penetrate tire and rim, would not have left nice, neat punctures. You'd see alot more damage. If the offending item were loose it would have remained stuck in the tire/wheel at least for a while making a very audible clicking sound while it worked itself back out.

What ever it was went in and came right back out, at the area of the highway that it happned between exit 36 and 37 on the LIE ( if you are familar with the area) if it was a gun shot it had to come from a car behind me. When Charlie looked at it his first thought was that it was a bullet, we finally settled on a a piece of steel from all the road construction only thing we thing that would be long enough to go through.

If it was from construction...can't you take that to the city and get your money back for the tire and rim?

I think you'd have to have the offending part to prove that it was from road construction materials, rather than from uncovered dump truck.

In my old Camaro, I ran over what appeared to be a small-block Chevy pushrod & hosed a brand new Radial T/A. Apparently the front tire flipped it up at the perfect angle & it went right into the back, just at the edge of the tread. Had it not been a 245/60/14, it mighta hosed the rim, too.
I just hate when that happens.

Gotta love the Expressway.

Between 36 and 37...that's around Roslyn no? Doubt there was much gunfire 'round those parts. But crazier things...

Bodinski,

I am thinking that is exactly what happned front tire sent it to the back and right through the rim, well as I said in my earlier post snows are now on so I will get replacement rim & tire early next year time to start saving.
