2005 Cooper S rear brake line install - question on fitment.

Hey guys,

I'm looking for help from anyone that has installed brake lines on the rear.

The lines I've seen for both 02-03 and 04-06 have a similar type fitting on the end where the line passes through the body bracket and mates to the hardline. The fitting is round and has 2 'flats' on it for anti-rotation.

I have a customer who indicates that his bracket and thus brake line end fitting are different. He said it uses what I could best call a 'tongue and groove' type arrangement or spline - in other words the fitting has grooves on it that engage 'teeth' on the ID of the bracket. It accomplishes the same thing as the flats - anti rotation.

Can anyone else speak to this?

Sorry - I have no pics yet. Thanks much if anyone can help

-Ken

I will try to post some pics.. but what he spells out here IS the case.. can anyone lend any suggestions or pointers... or expereince to this ? I would have posted some pics before.. but i thought that id have to remove the lines for one to see the 'teeth' that he is refering to. I will try to do this tomorrow.. or Saturday.

do the lines mate together? and the only issue is that they dont have the correct configuration on the bracket on the car?

Thanks for the replies..

Fit together.. well i dont know means how i can never get the ends to meet. I assume that they would and that yes .. the braket should be flat on two sides instead of the 'teeth' configuration.

Yes.. i will take the pics Sunday and post them. I may also go by the dealer and get a pic from the parts book.

Has anyone change the rear lines and encountered this problem?

Many of us have changed the rear lines, but without problems. I'm hoping the photos will clear things up.

Thanks for your reply...
um... im just a little confused... Is it correct that this is talkinga bout the caliper end ?

I did a google on banjo fitting.. and all i see is the end of the hose....meeting with the caliper. or the banjo bolt itself.

I am dealing with the other end.. the end that meets the steel line.

I will get pics tomorrow and post them. I will post pics of the stock hoses, the mounting braket and the new hoses that im having a problem with - and all the ends.

I was just told that the person who makes these says that he KNOWS that the female end infact fits.. and this makes no sense to me. It does NOT fit. I wasnt the only one who tried to make this fit. My friend who was with me.. also tried... and no can do. The hose end is just too big around. (see pics).

What to do. ?

Drill out that wonky hole and mate them up? It's a compression fitting, so as long as the hard line mates up and you snug it down, it should be just fine.

Does the hardline have a spring bracket on it? If so, even better!

Thanks so much for your reply...

Yes... it does have the hard spring.... that is an an idea. though ....
thats a good size bit .... will have to give this some thought.

The main thing that im worried about is the steel line coming from above. its not flexible and does not move much. Let me guess... do it carefully! LOL

You'll need to go and buy a drill bit, I'd wager... buy the right size, that'll barely allow the new SS line's collar to pass through. And, you'll need to drill slowly - very, very carefully, yes, in order to avoid hitting the hardline. If it were me, I'd search around looking for places to unclip the hardline and move it out of the way a bit.

Anyhoo, this should work just fine. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't!

I will have to give this some serious consideration. But I will talk to the dealer first... (about that hole)

Thanks so much for your replies and suggestions!

I am hoping that someone else will come forward and let us know if they have the same issue as I did. I have decided not to drill mine out.. I want the right parts.

I just found out I have the same problem. Yes the new SS brake line will not fit through the hole with the teeth. I also do not know what to do now. My hard line will move a little and I think I might be able to get it out of the way. At least on the left rear. Looks like if the diameter of the hole was just a little larger, it would fit so maybe drilling won't to too hard. Getting a drill bit in the hole is going to be hard. Too much stuff in the way for the drill. Might need a dremmel type thing to grind down the teeth. I really did not want this to be such a hard job. Well I need to go bleed the brakes after removing and re-installing the brake line.

Cap the tube end with a small valcume cap from the auto parts store to keep both fluid in and crap out.

You can bend the hardline carefully out of the way for the time being. Just don't bend it real tight so not to kink it. You can probably remove the "teeth" with either a dremel tool of sorts or perhaps a medium sized Uni-bit which will be a nice addtion to the tool box. Me, I'd probably just use a carbide tool on the die-grinder.

Success! I used a latex glove and a rubber band to keep the fluid in and the junk out. Then a carbide tool with the dremel. I just needed to grind down each tooth a little and the brake lines fit just fine.

Thanks Todd.
