R56 Wheels...17x8 goodness!

Just kidding...Senor Webb has them on his R56 already (black ones). Some of you might have seen them in Vegas.
This is a great picture of the 17x8 (with 235 RA-1's) vs stock:

If the rim doesn't clear that's already cause for a spacer but so far so good.
So mount the tire and try again and if you get rubbing then post a few pictures and let us know what you can do to make it all fit.
If you are planning to lower your MINI you'll likely have some rubbing in the rear. Depends how low you go and your alignment settings.

Please see third post in this thread. They are installed, and working well. The silver ones are just waiting to go on my car...the second install.
I was just happy to see that the R56 appears to have just a little more wiggle room than my R53's I have owned in the past. I could have never mounted these 17x8's with 235's on my R53 without spacers.

Randy Webb just lowered his R56 with the H & R springs. We'll see how it does at the first autocross coming up as far as rub is concerned...? So far it is driving well on the street.
I'll look to lower my "high clearance off roader" soon also.

That is good to hear. I was discussing wheels in depth with a buddy who is going to get an R56. I told him that after checking out the R56 I think that 18x8 with 35-40mm offset will be a good fit, and due to the larger looking wheel wells/flares that 225/40-18s will look and function best. I guess we'll have to see if the additional tire width and height will work with a drop or not, but I'm glad to hear that others are already mounting 8" wide wheels, more width=more grip.

235/40/17's with stock set up did fine on the autocross course. No dectectable rubbing or problem.
The lowered R56 (h&r springs) rubs just slightly on the outer edge of the tire against the fender liner both front and rear upon compression when racing/driving. Nothing significant enough to cause problem or issue. Just a little plastic on the underside of the fender is gently removed by the tire. As the car is lowered more negative camber is available. Roughly 1.5 degrees in the front.
All good news.

Since 235/40/17s fit will 225/50/15's
Arron at Outmotoring had told me that Pro Race 1's in 15x7 with a 45 offset will clear 2007 MCS brakes. 225/50/15's are a little narrower and shorter than 235/40/17's so I'm thinking they should fit fine - at least without a lowered suspension. Anyone have experience with this size or an informed opinion.
Thanks,
Mark

looks like I know what my track setup will be.

I talked to Dan at H&R after I bought springs from him, I haven't lowered yet because I'm still looking for the right wheel/tires to lower on. he has black Rota R2's 17x7.5 with 235-35-17s (I'm 99% sure that's what he told me). the setup looks great and he said rides well also, with slight rub on hard track turns, not daily driving. i think I'll go with a similar setup. anyone got a line of some alternative wheels/tires in that category?

crazynates, there are TONS of 17x7.5" wide wheels out there for MINI's. That's what I have on mine (2nd set of this size) and lots of others have that size on their R53's.
Dan is probably running 235/40-17s, since that is a proper size tire. Sounds like either 7.5" or 8" wide wheels are the way to go on the R56. 215/45-17s work well on a 7.5" wide wheel, on an 8" wide I would run 235/40-17. Hope that helps.

17x7 Stock and a very common size good for imports
17x7.5 a bit wider but also a little heavier
17x8 still pretty common size for upgrades especially with deep dish designs.
17x8 is good for 225/45-17 or wider tires but MINIs have limited clearance so you have to find the right offset and right tire that fits snug enough.
If you are adding wheel fender flaring then it doesn't matter, get 17x9 or wider.
17x8 will look more aggressive on a MINI and stretch the 215/40 or 215/45 tire a bit wider than when mounted on a 17x7 rim. The extra weight of the 8" wide rim is offset by having more rubber to contact the road.
In the end it is a combination of tire choice, tire size and wheel size that gives the MINI the "right look" or "right feel". Some tires only come in 215mm wide sizes that will fit without rubbing.
