I currently run 17" with a 45 series tire. I can't decide if I should go 35 or 40 series with the new 18".

I'd think 215-35 if you're considering any kind of drop, as it would provide a bit more rub insurance. However, if ride comfort is any concern, the 205-40s would be a better choice (additionally, they are closer in diameter to stock so you will have less of a change in your speedo reading). I think that the GP's run 205-40s on a 7" wide rim.
