As probably one of the easiest DIY projects for Mini Cooper owners, replacing the side view mirror caps will add a new and noticeable flare to your 3rd generation Mini. If you have a 1st or 2nd generation Cooper, the installation is similar to the steps below. However, the size of the mirror caps are different for each generation, so make sure you purchase caps that will fit your Mini (F55/56) nice and snug. From a checkered design to representing your country's flag, this mirror modification is a popular among many Mini enthusiasts. Here's the essential information to install mirror caps yourself.
Materials Needed
- New side view mirror caps
- Masking tape
- Plastic pry tool or flat head screwdriver
Step 1 – Remove the mirror caps
- Apply three strips of masking tape across the top of the side view mirror assembly: two on the sides and one on the top center. Make sure the tape covers the gap between the mirror base assembly and mirror cap.
- Using a plastic pry tool, start prying out the mirror cap at the piece of tape closest to the window.
- Move to the center piece of tape and then to the piece on the far end, making sure the top of the mirror cap pops out.
- Then, use your hands to pull the mirror cap diagonally and away from the base assembly.
Step 2 – Install the new side view mirror caps
- To install your new mirror cap, line up the tabs on the mirror and the cap.
- Push the mirror cap onto the base assembly, and make sure you see as well as hear the tabs snap into place.
- Once the mirror caps have properly clicked into place, you should not be able to wiggle it free.
